Press Glass Explorations
I am very interested in the process of factory press glass. Over the past seven years I have been researching the machinery and tools, and after acquiring a hundred year old hand press in 2013, I have been able to learn how to press my own forms. Through this history of glassmaking I aim to explore innovative ways to create sculpture with future plans of larger installations.
For this recent body of work I focused on a duck factory mold that was originally used as a cover to a small dish. I wanted to alter the product to give the form character and emotion. I also explored how to contextualize the form into a surrounding, which led me back to hot glass as a raw material. The fresh ladle of glass contrasts the factory press glass process and also gives the duck a water puddle to swim.
